Asia: endemic to the Jordan River drainage basin, where it is widely distributed in lakes and most tributaries. In the coastal plain of Palestine it occurs only in the Nahr al-Muqatta (Qishon River).

Dorsale stekels (totaal): 0; Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal): 10; Anale stekels 0; Anale zachte stralen: 12 - 16. Elongate and compressed body. Mouth sub terminal, its cleft reaching to below the nostrils. Pharyngeal teeth 5-5, smooth and hooked.

Found near the bottom of lakes, ponds and streams of slow-flowing water. Spawning season: January to April.
